Blue Chip SUP Academy is owned and operated by Brian Johncey trading as Blue Chip SUP Academy  Blue Chip SUP Academy trains SUP instructors to the highest standards (Thames Sailing Club)

Brian Johncey’s Blue Chip is the oldest family run Windsurfing, Surfing and Stand Up Paddleboarding centre in the UK. In1980 Brian founded Blue Chip, the Windsurfing and Surfing store along with Express Windsurfing and Surfboard Repairs, Brian has been working with Structural Polymer fibres and resins for many years. Brian started building and repairing white water canoes back in 1965 as a volunteer youth activities leader. Brian soon gained the reputation of a master repairer in man made structural polymer materials where a strength to weight ratio was the prime requisite then just a few years later added the sail repairing arm to the already successful supply and repair business.

When SUP came to the UK, Brian embraced this new water sport. Blue Chip soon gained a reputation as a leading SUP store and knowledge base for SUP. At Blue Chip, customer service, reputation and experience matters.
During his career, Brian has been a canoe, sub aqua, windsurfing and SUP instructor / trainer and has successfully completed the Academy of Surfing Instructors course to become the First UK qualified SUP instructor to ASI levels 1 & 2. Brian is also qualified as an "Activity First Aider" and has a "National Rescue Award" from the Royal National Life Saving Society and also has an enhanced CRB certificate. Brian is the Blue Chip SUP Coach and Membership Secretary for thje Blue Chip Super Club - British Canoeing SUP Tutor - British Canoeing SUP DSM Provider

The Blue Chip SUP Academy training course is designed to assist anyone who wants to gain more knowledge about the specialist sport of SUP. The course introduces and explains the basic techniques and strategies for working with SUPs. The course is a mix of theory and practical activity to ensure everyone has time to try things out.

  • Prerequisites:

  • The course is designed for experienced SUP paddlers, candidates will be expected to demonstrate a good level of competence on a board in at least the following SUP skills:

    • Key elements of efficient and effective SUP paddling.
    • Prone paddling
    • Kneeling and Standing
    • Trim, edge and balance
    • Efficient forward bi-lateral paddling
    • Moving sideways -sculling
    • Steering –cross bow strokes
    • Turning – Step back pivot and sweeps
    • Towing methods
  • Aspiring candidates are advised to have a valid First Aid endorsement prior to attending this course as this will be required prior to delivering any SUP introduction courses at the Thames Sailing Club Paddleboard School

Overview

  • The SUP Instructor course is designed to assist participants understanding of the specialist sport of SUP.

Course Aims

  • Provide a background to the various disciplines within SUP.
  • Introduce different types of equipment including the issues of equipment design, size and modification to suit all individual requirements.
  • Introduce and develop the knowledge of SUP specific techniques and tactics
  • Explore some SUP safety and rescue specifics
  • To organise and safely run an introduction to SUP session in the sheltered water environment.

Delivery

  • The mcourse includes both practical and theory sessions as detailed below.
  • Theory sessions should be embedded with practical examples where appropriate.

    By the end of this course participants should be able to:

    • Understand the worldwide development of the sport and the role of the various bodies in the field including British Canoeing, Academy of Surfing Instructors (ASI), Water Skill Academy, British Stand Up Paddleboard Association (BSUPA), Sport England and Adventure Activities Licencing Service (AALS).
    • Understand equipment design, size and modification to suit individual requirements.
    • Provide a background to the various activities within SUP paddling and the specific techniques that apply to each.
    • Understand the different types of board available, their characteristics and the different techniques used on them.
    • Understanding of handling an SUP efficiently
    • To organise and safely run an introduction to SUP session in the sheltered water environment

    • Foundation skills on a SUP
    • Running an introduction to SUP
    • Rescues specific to SUP

    • After the Course

      • After completing the course, candidates will receive a certificate of attendance from Blue Chip SUP Academy.
      • On completion of your course, you will be invited to deliver 2 supervised SUP beginner classes to a satisfactory standard at Thames Sailing Club Paddleboard School. Once completed and signed off, you will receive a credit card style Blue Chip SUP Academy instructor ID card

  • Is this SUP Instructor course suitable for you



    This course is not designed for beginners, we will NOT be teaching you how to paddle.
    During the course, you will be asked to demonstrate a good level of competence on your board in at least the following SUP skills:
    • Key elements of efficient and effective SUP paddling.
    • Prone paddling
    • Kneeling and Standing
    • Trim, edge and balance
    • Efficient forward bi-lateral paddling
    • Moving sideways -sculling
    • Steering –cross bow strokes
    • Turning – Step back pivot and sweeps
  • SUP rescue
    You will be spending time in the water during the "on the water session" which will include technique instruction on:

    • Towing methods
    • Recovering a paddler back onto their board
    • Removal of an unresponsive paddler from the water
    • Swimmer recovery
    • Games applicable to skill development on an SUP

  • If you are not a competent paddler and unable to demonstrate these basic paddling skills during the course, then you will not be able to teach SUP beginners how to paddle and this course may not be for you.
