British Canoeing SUP Discipline Support Module (DSM)

The British Canoeing SUP Discipline Support Module is designed to assist anyone who wants to gain more knowledge about the specialist discipline of SUP. The course introduces and explains the basic techniques and strategies for working with SUPs. The course is a mix of theory and practical activity to ensure everyone has time to try things out.

Prerequisites:

  • Although the course is designed for BC coaches and leaders (or aspiring coaches/leaders) and experienced SUP paddlers, there are no formal prerequisites.

  • Aspiring candidates are advised to have a valid First Aid endorsement prior to attending this course as this will be required prior to delivering any SUP introduction courses

Overview

  • The SUP Discipline Support Module is designed to assist participants understanding of the specialist discipline of SUP.

Module Aims

  • Provide a background to the various disciplines within SUP.
  • Introduce different types of equipment including the issues of equipment design, size and modification to suit all individual requirements.
  • Introduce and develop the knowledge of SUP specific techniques and tactics
  • Explore some SUP safety and rescue specifics
  • To organise and safely run an introduction to SUP session in the sheltered water environment.

Course Length

  • 6-hours

Delivery

  • The module includes both practical and theory sessions as detailed below.
  • Theory sessions should be embedded with practical examples where appropriate.

    By the end of this module participants should be able to:

    • Understand the worldwide development of the sport and the role of the various bodies on the field including British Canoeing, Academy of Surfing Instructors (ASI), British Stand Up Paddleboard Association (BSUPA), Sport England and Adventure Activities Licencing Service (AALS).
    • Understand equipment design, size and modification to suit individual requirements.
    • Provide a background to the various disciplines within SUP paddling and the specific techniques that apply to each.
    • Understand the different types of board available, their characteristics and the different techniques used on them.
    • Understanding of handling an SUP efficiently
    • To organise and safely run an introduction to SUP session in the sheltered water environment

  • After the Course

    • After completing the module candidates receive a certificate of attendance from their Home Nation
    • British Canoeing Member certificate cost is £17.50  (this cost is included in your course booking)
    • Non-member certificate cost is £25.00
    • On completion of your course you will receive a credit card style Blue Chip SUP instructor ID card
  • The following course prices include the cost of the British Canoeing certificate of attendance
